El 29-30 de noviembre, en nuestra querida playa. Reunión este viernes 21, a las 20:00 en la Kultur-Etxe de Ibarrangelu, para ir preparando la cosa.
He tenido el blog un poco descuidado. Os pido disculpas. Entre que no ha habido olas y he estado un poco liado no he tenido tiempo ni ocasión para colgar temas nuevos.
Voy a aprovechar una foto que saqué mientras estaba viendo este sábado el partido de fútbol de mi hija Ainhoa en los playeros de Zarautz. Lo prometido es deuda: Gorka, como bien sabes, en el Cantábrico también hay días birriosos y éste era uno de ellos, aunque con tablón se habría podido rascar algo (no era el caso de este surfista).
Pues no va a ser todo sólo churfing en Laga. Hay gente creativa que se inventa cosas como cierta apuesta que han cruzado dos fornidos chavalotes locales, Miguel de la Mar e Iñigo Urkiola, con otro conocido personaje del lugar: Ruskus, Melodi o... bueno no voy a desvelar su identidad, que los nicks son sagrados. La apuesta consiste en bañarse en Laga todos los sábados...., sin neopreno, claro. El susodicho me ha enviado este testimonio gráfico de uno de los primeros chapuzones. Ya iremos dando cuenta aquí de sus hazañas, ahora que viene lo bueno: viento francés, escarcha en la arena, agua a 10º....

Y el después. ¿A qué está bien el uniforme? Aunque me temo que pronto tendrán que cambiar la birra por un buen coñac de garrafa....
Va bien el otoño, ¿verdad? De vez en cuando están llegando marejadas consistentes, y, lo que es mejor para muchos, coincidiendo con fin de semana. Este finde también ha sido así y ha habido buenos baños. Esta foto es de esta mañana. Está sacada con el móvil y no se ve muy bien. Es un ángulo poco corriente de un spot muy conocido por todos nosotros.
Me tomareis por un ingenuo, pero se ha hecho historia. Mis preferencias personales, como las de la mayoría de las personas que conozco, estaban por Barack Obama. Creo que su victoria es una buena noticia para el mundo, así como, en mi opinión, la reelección de George Bush Jr. fue una mala. No he hablado todavía con mi padre al respecto. El era un fan de Kennedy y me gustaría que me contará como vivió aquello. Es obvio que todos le vemos similitudes con JFK y él las ha explotado con inteligencia.
Pero al grano, que este es un blog, ante todo, de surf. ¿Cuál es la conexión? Pues que, no sé si por casualidad, razones que no alcanzamos a comprender, o, lo más probable, por construcciones intelectuales que nos montamos a posteriori, la entrada de presidentes USA singulares ha coincido con grandes cambios en el devenir del surfing moderno. A saber:
1952-1960: Dwight David Eisenhower (republicano). Se popularizan las tablas Malibu Chip y la fabricación en foam, fibra y poliéster. Era dorada del hotdogging.
1960-1963: John Fitzgerald Kennedy (demócrata). Popularización masiva del surf. Auge de la surf music. El focus pasa poco a poco de Malibu a la North Shore.
1963-1969: Lyndon B. Johnson (demócrata). Decadencia del lonboard y shortboard revolution. Auge de la contracultura y la psicodelia. Fin del sueño americano post 2GM.
1976-1980: Jimmy Carter (demócrata). Inicios del profesionalismo como hoy lo conocemos. Recital de Tomson, Rabbit y Mark Richards en los inviernos de la North Shore. Popularización del skate y las maniobras inspiradas en él.
1980-1988: Ronald Reagan (republicano). Popularización de la thruster y del marketing surfero.
1992-2000: Bill Clinton (demócrata). Inicio de la era Slater.
Me he olvidado de Richard Nixon (1969-1974, republicano), Gerald Ford (1974-1976), George Bush Sr. (1988-1992) y George Bush Jr. (2000-2008) porque no sé qué efemérides surfera atribuirles.

El poster es una famosa foto de un no menos famoso surfer en su hábitat natural, bien profundo en el tubo: el sudafricano Shaun Tomson.
Vaya olas ha habido este finde. Y parece que mañana por la mañana se mantiene. Han funcionado todos los spots de calidad. Las playas, desfasadas, aunque en Laga se ha podido entrar por ese extraño fenómeno que le está ocurriendo últimamente a esa nuestra querida playa: la onda viene pero no termina de agarrar fondo hasta el último momento, por lo que da la impresión de que entra menos mar. En el resto, no es que haya estado enorme, pero ha estado fuertecillo. Que ha habido temilla, vaya.
Mañana, último lunes, tengo que ultimar unas cosillas del curro y luego tenemos comida gernikesa con los compañeros, así que, hasta la vuelta....

Otro clásico, peli del año 1970 de Hal Jepsen. Su montaje (teniendo en cuenta que cualquier chavalillo te monta hoy en día un peliculón en su ordenador) y sonido (fusila sin piedad, me imagino que directamente del tocata de su casa, grandes hits del rock de la época) son un poco toscos, pero tiene un encanto que engancha a la primera y muestra a la perfección la transición del tablón a la tabla corta, de Dick Dale y los Beach Boys a la contracultura de los Rolling Stones, Byrds y Jimi Hendrix... Aparecen surfeando muchos nombres míticos (muchos) en no menos míticos spots de California y Hawaii. Una joya.
Al loro para mañana y el finde, que puede haber buenas condiciones tempranito...
¿Qué significa ésto? Son las vértebras que tengo afectadas. Por fin sé lo que tengo en la espalda. El resultado de la resonancia ha dado una hernia entre L2-L3, una protusión entre L3-L4, L4-L5 tocada y otra hernia entre L5-S1. En suma, estoy bastante jodido. La primera pregunta al médico era obligada y os la podéis imaginar: ¿voy a poder surfear? La respuesta, una alzada de hombros que significaba "mientras el cuerpo aguante". ¿Desaparecerá el pinzamiento? Poco a poco, si sigo un programa de ejercicios abdominales y lumbares. ¿Conclusión? A aprovechar para cuidarme, ponerme en forma sin excesos y surfear tranquilo en la medida que se pueda.
Nuestro buen amigo Alberto Rueda ha estado en Etiopía hace poco. Aquí le vemos con una lugareña. Por lo que me contó, me dio la impresión de que ha sido su viaje más duro, pero quizá no tan duro como lo que le espera... en Sitges, ya que se ha ido a vivir a Barcelona. Seguro que alguna ola pillará.

Recién salida está la Glide nº 7. Ya comentamos el número anterior en el blog y di un poco mi opinión sobre ella. Este número no lo he podido leer todavía de cabo a rabo (lo dejo en mi mesilla y lo voy saboreando). Mantengo lo dicho sobre que tiene un toque un poco snob, pero trae cosas interesantes y número a número va dejando atrás el lastre de hablar de lo obvio , esto es, endless summer, el gran miércoles, leroy grannis, etc., necesario e instructivo, como en todo proyecto que empieza de cero, pero que puede acabar siendo una inmensa paja mental, para empezar a pesar más los aspectos de actualidad, retro, pero actualidad.
Bueno es una primera aproximación después de una primera ojeada. Ya escribiré otro post si tengo que rectificar.
¿Os acordais del artículo que colgué sobre la Encyclopedia of Surfing, de Matt Warshaw? Pues se me ha ocurrido que podríamos hacer una Enziklopedia del Surf de Laga, con conceptos nuestros, de andar por casa, que recojan un poco lo que significa el surf de aquí. Para eso necesito vuestra ayuda. Lo que va a continuación son unas cuantas entradas que se me han ocurrido. En una primera fase haríamos las entradas y después cerraríamos el contenido de cada entrada. Espero vuestras aportaciones y por favor, no os mosqueeis si algo no aparece, es simple olvido o desconocimiento. La idea es incluir cualquier concepto que se nos ocurra que tenga que ver con el tema: lugares, material, personajes, etc.

Ya se acabó el Billabong Pro. Eneko no dio la sorpresa y Slater se hizo con su noveno título. Empezó bien, con un 7, pero luego no le echó garra o no vio claro a cuál tirarse y Kelly se impuso. Encima comió contra el fondo en la última ola (tirarse en marea baja a medio recorrido está bastante difícil) y parece ser que salió con la cara reventada.
Así que, sabido ya quién es el campeón del mundo 2008, sólo faltaba saber quién era el campeón de Mundaka. Slater cayó ante Tom Withaker, que lo hizo todo bien. Aritz también cayó. Fueron pasando las mangas dobles. Por cierto, este sistema de las mangas dobles parecía un sistema un poco extraño al principio, pero luego se demostró que era lo mejor para Mundaka, dadas las características de la ola, tanto para aprovechar las mejores condiciones de marea, como para dar más espectáculo en mangas de esa duración (30 min.), al poder ver los espectadores a cuatro surfistas en acción al mismo tiempo. Parece ser que va a haber otras pruebas en las que se implante en el futuro.
El sábado pudimos presenciar la final (Parko vs. CJ) en vivo y en directo y fue cómo no habíamos visto en los últimos tiempos en Mundaka: con olas decentes y bastante emoción e igualdad. De hecho, C.J. le robó la cartera a Parko en los últimos segundos, esto es, Parkinson tenía prioridad y se tiró a una ola mediocre, mientras que, inmediatamente por detrás, CJ Hobgood se tiró a la buena y le dio la vuelta a la puntuación prácticamente en el último segundo y ante las narices del bueno de Joel. Posteriormente, hubo división de opiniones en la cátedra (compuesta de ilustres veteranos de Laga). ¿La cagó Parko? Yo soy de la opinión de que sí, porque un surfista de su categoría, con clase como para ser campeón del mundo algún día, tiene que tener sabiduría táctica suficiente como para aprovechar esa ventaja, siendo la ola a la que se tiró de sacar un 6 como mucho. Otros opinaban que de fuera se ve fácil, pero que Parko no podía saber lo que venía por detrás. El caso es que CJ no es manco que digamos (aunque sea en unas circunstancias extrañas, es el campeón del mundo de 2001) y no le hizo ascos al regalo.

Australian Joel Parkinson Forced into Second
MUNDAKA, Basque Country/Spain (Saturday, Oct. 4, 2008): Former ASP World Surfing Champion C.J. HOBGOOD (USA) defeated JOEL PARKINSON (Gold Coast, AUS) in three-foot (one metre) barrelling waves at the Billabong Pro Mundaka to claim his first ASP World Tour victory in four years today.
It was a classic déjà vu, affair of the last final the paired shared in 2004 in Japan where Hobgood garnered a last minute win over Parkinson in the dying seconds of the heat.
Despite opening the final with a near-perfect 9.93 tube ride, Hobgood, 29, was trailing Parkinson by 5.90 points with 15 seconds to go in the 35-minute match-up.
Parkinson, 27, looked set to claim his first victory in over two years but a tactical error saw him take the first wave of the last approaching set of the final only to find it lacked scoring potential, the error handed a small barrel to Hobgood for an 8.57 and the prestigious Billabong Pro Mundaka Title.
Hobgood moves to ASP World No. 6 with the result today. Parkinson moves to ASP World No. 3. The final was Hobgood's second this season – he lost to Slater in Fiji – and Parkinson's first.
Despite having an amazingly consistent year, Parkinson was unable to claim the victory that has eluded him for over two years.
Like many of the top-seeded surfers, Parkinson entered the event disenchanted with the season given nine-time ASP World Champion Kelly Slater's supremacy. Parkinson's interest piqued as he found himself at the pointy end of the Billabong Pro Mundaka draw.
Despite the loss, Parkinson was gracious in defeat – giving credit to Hobgood for his impressive surfing throughout the event.
Parkinson defeated Adrian Buchan (AUS) in the semifinals in a fashion similar to his elimination by Hobgood in the final. Twenty-six year old BUCHAN (Avoca, AUS) had PARKINSON on the back foot for the first half of the match-up. The stylish natural footer then charged back into contention with two high scoring rides to lock in his first final berth for 2008. Buchan won the last ASP World Tour event in France, and with his 3rd place result today, jumps to World No. 7. He was rated 14th before the European tour leg.
Sydney's LUKE STEDMAN failed to find his earlier event form in the second semi final left requiring a two wave scoring combination to HOBGOOD on the siren. Previous to his semifinal finish, Stedman hadn't advanced beyond Round 4 in a 2008 ASP World Tour event. His 3rd place finish equals his career best result .
Stedman rounds out the Top 10 with a World No. 10 rating post the Billabong Pro Mundaka. He will look to maintain the momentum heading to Brazil and France – the last two events of the season.

Segundo día en Mundaka. No estaba para echar cohetes, precisamente. Marcos, Txaber y Hodei se han ido a la calle. Quedan Aritz, que ha ganado con autoridad, y Eneko, que la puede liar. Le ha tocado nada menos que con Kelly Slater y puede pasar a la historia si le elimina... por retrasar la celebración de su 9º título.

Mundaka Fires for Day Two
MUNDAKA, Basque Country/Spain (Thursday, Oct. 2, 2008) – Day two of the Billabong Pro Mundaka saw the elimination round two heats staged in 1.5 metre waves (4-5ft) at the river-mouth break in the Basque region of Spain. As the tide drained out the famed Mundaka barrel turned on for the world’s best surfers contesting the ASP men’s world tour event.
Event organizers and the ASP have opted to use the Dual Heat format today to optimize the excellent conditions. First used in ASP World Tour competition at the Pipeline Masters in Hawaii last year, the ‘Dual Heat’ format features two heats run concurrently to maximize conditions on offer for the surfers and action in the water for the fans.
Top seeds reasserted themselves to dominate their wildcard and replacement opponents in their round two match-ups today. World no.3 BEDE DURBIDGE (Gold Coast, AUS) set an early pace, locking in a nine-point ride in the days opening heat to progress through to round three.
Looking sharp on a long-walling wave DURBIDGE amassed a number of major maneuvers for the excellent score and eliminated replacement surfer REUBYN ASH (GBR) from round two. DURBIDGE is out for a strong finish on the home run of the men’s world tour in a bid to challenge TAJ BURROW (AUS) for the No.2 position.
World no. 4 ADRIANAO de SOUZA (Brz) also advanced with ease into round three of the Billabong Pro Mundaka after disposing of local wildcard MARCO SAN SEGUNDO (EUK). The Brazilian, who has been enjoying a bumper season, is after a big result in Mundaka to solidify his position in the world’s top five.
American surfer C.J. HOBGOOD was forced to battle for his round three berth following a strong challenge by replacement surfer TXABER TROJACIA (EUK). The local charger managed an 8.17 but failed to find a back up wave to be eliminated in equal 33rd. Hobgood moving through to round three of the Billabong Pro Mundaka.
World no.9 ADRIAN BUCHAN (Avoca, AUS) bounced back from his opening round loss to defeat wildcard HODEI COLLAZO (EUK) and advance into round three of the Billabong Pro Mundaka. The twenty-six year old who posted his inaugural world tour victory last week in France is out for another taste of glory.
Hawaii’s stylish goofy footer FRED PATTACHIA made the most of the barrels with his prolific tube-riding ability. The 26 year-old managed a high scoring 9.5 ride to book his round three berth in the Billabong Pro Mundaka.
Australia’s KAI OTTON (Curl Curl) was another goofy footer to perform at the left hand break. The 28 year-old winning his way into the all-important round three. OTTON defeated big wave Tahitian charger MANOA DROLLET (PYF) in a one sided affair.
French favourite JEREMY FLORES out-surfed wildcard opponent MARK OCCHILUPO (AUS) to secure his place in the round three line-up of the Billabong Pro Mundaka . The twenty year-old managing to find the high scoring waves in the tricky line-up to defeat the former event champion.
Local favourite ARITZ ARANBURU (EUK) found his rhythm early to take down American CHIRS WARD and advance into round three of the Billabong Pro Mundaka. The 23 year-old crowd favourite is the first Basque in the sports history to join the ASP world surfing tour. With home-town advantage and a fierce determination ARANBURU is capable of an upset.
Fellow Basque surfer ANEKO ACERO is set to become apart of the sports history having drawn eight time world champion KELLY SLATER in round three of the Billabong Pro Mundaka tomorrow. Thirty-six year old Slater only has to progress though that one heat to claim his ninth world title. ACERO said no matter which way the heat goes it’s all good for him.
The opening four heats of round three were staged with de Souza, Mick Campbell (Aus), Pattacchia and Joel Parkinson all advancing into round four.
Mundaka is predicted to be at it’s best tomorrow for surfing sensation Kelly Slater’s (USA) possible ninth world title win,

No todo va a ser surf teórico y/o retro. También me gusta el surf moderno y, aunque no sea un seguidor fanático, el WCT. Y el CT está aquí, en Mundaka, así que merece la pena un comentario.
Se rumorea, visto que esta prueba parece gafada en los últimos (ya demasiados) años y este año ha estado a punto de no celebrarse por el veto de algunos pros, que quiere tirarse el campeonato sin más rodeos (pueden hacerlo en cuatro días netos). Ya sorprendió que optaran por Sopelana como comodín (no sólo hay exceso de política y tejemanejes en Euskadi, parece que también en la ASP) y que encima, se dejara caer algún comentario humillante sobre Bakio, y ahora van a aprovechar el primer swell que se asome, aunque sea con mal viento, excepto el fin de semana, para tirar p´alante. Bueno, habrá que verlo, si sirve de consuelo igual es Mundaka el único sitio donde puede estar decente con las condiciones que se avecinan...
Kelly Slater lo tiene fácil para sumar en Mundaka su noveno, se dice pronto, título mundial. Sólo tiene que pasar una ronda más. Si es así, y continúa en competición hasta el final, puede haber un ambiente digno de verse en la final (si se celebra este finde), como hace dos años, cuando sumo el séptimo. Eneko ha entrado de chiripa (por la baja de Tim Boal) y se ha defendido más que dignamente, pasando su ronda de calle. Aritz, Hodei y Txaber tendrán que ir a la repesca.
SLATER 1 HEAT AWAY FROM 9TH WORLD TITLE MUNDAKA, Basque Country/Spain (Wednesday, October 1, 2008) – Surfing sensation KELLY SLATER (USA) is just one heat away from his ninth ASP world title after advancing directly into round three of the Billabong Pro Mundaka today.
The Floridian posted a 9.00 and a 7.33 to win his Round 1 heat at the back-up venue for the ASP men's world tour event of Sopelana today.
In messy, one metre waves the 36 year-old posted a heat total of 16.33 (out of a possible 20), the second highest of the day and easily trumped Taylor Knox (USA) and replacement surfer Reubyn Ash's (GBR) single digit scores.
There is only once scenario that stands in the way of Slater clinching in Spain – him failing to advance from Round 3 and World No. 2 Taj Burrow (AUS) subsequently winning the event. While Slater seems squarely focused on the next heat, Burrow has his eyes on the Billabong Pro Mundaka title.
The West Australian shredding his way into round three with the days highest heat score of 16.34 (out of a possible 20).
World no.5 JOEL PARKINSON (AUS) opened his 2008 Billabong Pro Mundaka campaign with two high scoring rides to never be in doubt of a round three berth. The stylish natural footer quickly locked in an 8.10 and 7.50 wave scores to defeat TIM REYES (USA) and local wildcard HODEI COLLARZO (EUK).
Two-time defending Billabong Pro Mundaka champion BOBBY MARTINEZ (USA) is also hoping to strengthen his position in the Top 10 and go for his third consecutive Mundaka crown. He beat BEN DUNN (AUS) and wildcard MARK OCCHILUPO (AUS) in Round 1 today.
Replacement surfers ENEKO ACERO (EUK) and NIC MUSCROFT (Torquay, AUS) advanced from their Round 1 heats today with big wins.
Local Basque surfer ACERO (Bilbao, EUK) ) defeated two of the sports biggest names with his victory over world no.4 ADRIANO de SOUZA (BRZ) and high profile rookie JORDY SMITH (ZAF) to advance directly into round three. The 31 year-old finished nearly two points ahead of runner-up of his nearest opponent with a heat total of 13.17 (out of a possible 20).
MUSCROFT who is the first ASP replacement surfer after narrowly missing full-time ASP World Tour qualification last year, has competed in six events this year. His solid heat win today is his first on the ASP World Tour.

Vaya finde de tumbing playero en Laida. La temperatura, ideal, el sol, picando lo justo, el agua, todavía como para darse un chapuzón sin pasar frío y encima, sitio para aparcar sin problemas. Había que aprovechar este regalo y lo hemos hecho. Qué pena que no haya llevado la cámara, pues la luz estaba ideal.
Me ciño al tema: otra peli que he descargado de i-tunes. Barefoot Adventure fue la tercera película de Bruce Brown (el de Endless Summer). Se estrenó en el circuito de exhibición de pelis surferas (ball-rooms, civic-rooms, etc.) de California en 1961 y constaba de material rodado en 1960, sobre todo en California y Hawaii. Es una peli ideal para ver en acción tanto a los maestros del hotdogging como el tamaño de la época. Y por qué no decirlo, si la enchufas en la sobremesa (que no me lean los puristas) también para quedarte dormido plácidamente con la banda sonora jazzera de Bud Shank.
Edo udagoiena, otoño, autumn... El verano se ha acabado. Ayer, aprovechando que tengo que hacer cuatro paradas para el trayecto de 22 km. a Lekeitio, pasé por Laida y Laga. En Antzoras saqué esta foto. Puede que sea el último baño decente en unos cuantos días. Ya había como 15 surfistas en Mundaka, aunque estaba pequeño, ideal para el longboard. En Laga estaba la peña de habituales. Ninguno en el agua. Nó sé que ha pasado con los fondos de Laga los dos últimos años, que no están nada bien, y encima de viento estaba peor. Bueno, mal de muchos....
Estos últimos días lo he pasado mal con la lesión. No porque me molestara más, sino de bajonazo por no saber bien qué es, cómo se puede curar o sencillamente si es curable y si voy a poder volver a surfear algún día, o simplemente, hacer vida normal. Lo siento, lo último que querría es convertirme en un brasa y un quejica, pero es que llevo ya dos meses y aquí sigo... En fin, tenía que desahogarme. Espero no volver a mencionarlo por otros dos meses, o mejor todavía, que acabe siendo sólo un mal recuerdo... Ojalá.
Al grano: como no me queda más remedio que dedicarme al surf "teórico", me he descargado (de forma legal, pagando religiosamente) una peli mítica de 1972, dirigida por Greg MacGilivray Jim Freeman y con música de Honk, Five Summer Stories, para algunos, junto a Endless Summer y Morning of the Earth, la santísima trinidad de la cinematografía surfera.
La he descargado con i-tunes y la tengo que pasar a formato para ver en dvd cañí. Ya os contaré.
